Return of the Caliphate : reasons and consequences

The beginning of the Arab Spring at the turn of the year 2010-2011 transformed the Middle East from a region difficult to understand into one that is virtually impossible to understand. Several important states have ceased to exist, others are in dissolution and millions of people are fleeing without hope of political solutions or better times.

In Return of the Caliphate reasons and consequences, with a new up-dated foreword by the author, Magnus Norell writes accessibly and pithily on events of global dimensions that are still being analysed with the inadequate tools, comparisons and perspective of an awakening, what is it we see?

Norell goes deeper and provides a context, very much in short supply as regards knowledge of the Islamic State. The concluding reflection on the climate of debate in Sweden and Europe as regards Islamism, freedom of expression and how extreme movements can be resisted sets the book in a context of immediate concern that leaves no-one untouched.

Dr Magnus Norell is Adjunct Scholar at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy in Washington DC and a Senior Fellow at The European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels. He is a researcher and specialises in issues relating to terrorism, political violence and security policy in the Middle East (including North Africa) and Central Asia.
